People who want their password vault on their own device with zero cloud exposure, full control over sync, and a built-in 1Password importer that makes migration a one-step CSV operation.
KeePassXC
KeePassXC is an open source alternative to 1Password, LastPass, and Dashlane. Cross-platform, local-first password manager that keeps your vault encrypted on your own device with no cloud, no subscriptions, and no third-party access. GPL-2.0-or-later licensed, 28.3k GitHub stars, no terminal required to start, and last released 2026-03-10.

How to start todayShould you switch?
You share passwords with family or a team (KeePassXC has no built-in sharing), need zero-config cross-device sync without configuring a file sync tool, or rely on a mobile-first workflow where an official native app is required.
KeePassXC has no built-in sync. Your vault is a local file: you choose how to sync it across devices (Dropbox, Syncthing, Nextcloud, iCloud Drive -- anything that syncs files). Mobile access requires a separate third-party app: KeePassDX on Android, Strongbox on iOS. These sync and mobile gaps are by design, not a bug: the tradeoff is zero cloud dependency.

"I recently migrated from 1Password using Dropbox for sync, to KeePassXC (Windows, Linux & Mac) and Strongbox (iPhone & iPad) still using Dropbox. Migration was a simple matter of exporting a CSV and then just correctly selecting the column order for KeePass import."
"Stumbled on KeepassXC this time. Solved most of those problems. Certainly well enough to replace the old, unsupported software I'd been using for something as important as my most vital secrets and identity documents. Just got everything migrated over. Bye, AgileBits! After 5 years it's been... swell?"
"I moved to Keepass (and opensource apps) and im fairly happy with it. I dont think i will go back to 1Password."
"Good post. I switched from Bitwarden to KeepassXC / KeepassDX / Syncthing across my Android phone, Linux PC, and Windows PC. This was the setup I had prior to using Bitwarden for the first time. The Keepass experience is significantly better these days! Importing from Bitwarden is trivial too. Recommended!"
