How to start todayShould you switch?
Teams and individuals who want a Notion-style workspace (docs, wikis, databases, kanban) with local-first data ownership, or who want to self-host the full stack for privacy. Desktop-first with native macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android clients.
You need a full-featured real-time browser-first collaboration workspace with no setup overhead: the free hosted tier caps at 2 members and 10 AI responses. Teams larger than 2 needing hosted collaboration must pay (Pro at $10/user/month billed annually), or self-host.
The cloud backend (AppFlowy-Cloud repo) is open-core: AppFlowy has self-declared it is 'adopting an open-core model.' The hosted service runs a closed-source commercial fork. Desktop and web client apps (Flutter/Web) remain AGPL-3.0. If you self-host, you use the AGPL-licensed AppFlowy-Cloud repo, not the commercial fork. AGPL copyleft requires that if you modify and offer the software over a network, you must publish your source changes.
