Use it if

Teams replacing Airtable that want to self-host and keep API access. NocoDB exposes REST and GraphQL APIs automatically from any connected database (SQLite, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQL Server), with a spreadsheet-style UI that non-technical users can navigate and 20,000+ successful Airtable imports claimed by the project.

Skip it if

You need to redistribute or commercialize the software: the Sustainable Use License prohibits commercial redistribution and SaaS use. Also not suitable if you rely on Airtable formula fields, since the import tool does not migrate them.

Watch out

NocoDB is NOT open source by OSI definition. The Sustainable Use License restricts commercial redistribution and SaaS use. Many users and news articles call it open source, but a company building a product on top of NocoDB and charging customers may be in license violation. Formula fields do NOT migrate from Airtable and must be rebuilt manually. Free cloud tier caps at 1,000 records, which is below Airtable's free limit.

Some quotes here endorse the approach rather than report first-hand use, or report a problem. We label those.

"Most things moved into Obsidian with databases that needed to stay databases (versus tables) going into NocoDB (an airtable clone that can use sqlite). I still haven't found a replacement for "online thing that anyone can edit easily". Some wiki systems are close but I don't want to give up some of the richer component types like kanban cards."

"NocoDB is also a self-hosted option. I used it to power a family project that required regular API access, but without the rate limits of Google Sheets."

"Everyone wants something like a local version of Airtable, but the issue is anyone that tries immediately turns it into a cloud product. Nocodb is better, but is still severely restricted & tries to think too much in terms of replicating Excel functions, rather than making it easy to create your own using JS/TS."
